Sean Molloy

MB BS, MRCS, MSc(orthopaedic engineering), FRCS (Orth), Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Royal National Orthopedic Hospital

Mr Sean Molloy is leading a consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon with over 15 years’ experience who is renowned for his expertise, research and skill within the field of spinal surgery. He offers high-quality treatment for a range of spinal disorders including complex spinal surgery for scoliosis in children and adults in the form of spinal stabilisation. What’s more, he is uniquely qualified: he is the only person in the UK to hold dual qualifications as both a spinal surgeon and as a chiropractor.

Using this expertise, he aims to achieve the best possible results whilst making complex spinal surgery safer in a minimally-invasive fashion. He can perform minor procedures such as balloon kyphoplasty for myeloma, a condition of which he is he has a very keen interest in, and also spinal decompression and spinal fusion.

He’s a leader within his field in various ways. For example, he has held the post of clinical lead and clinical director of the spinal unit at the well-known Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore. He’s also widely recognised for his research, which has been published extensively and recognised across the globe. Furthermore, he is frequently invited to give keynote lectures, both nationally and internationally

As well as these accomplishments, he played a fundamental role in the introduction of spinal navigation surgery in the UK and he has been essential in teaching this technique to other generations of surgeons. At the RNOH, Mr Molloy has introduced spinal robotics and performed the first robotic-assisted surgery in the NHS. The RNOH has been chosen as the lead European training site in robotic spinal surgery, meaning that he will be leading the training of UK and European surgeons within this speciality.
