Prof. Dr. med. Karl Stoffel was born in Saas-Grund in 1968. He passed his state examination at the University of Bern in 1995. After working as an assistant doctor in Chur and St. Gallen, he was promoted to senior physician in 2001 after obtaining his specialist qualification in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system in St. Gallen under the direction of Prof. A. Gächter. This was followed by several years of research and clinical work at the University of Australia in Perth under the direction of Prof. M. Kuster. In 2007 he was elected chief physician for orthopedics and traumatology at the cantonal hospital in Chur before being appointed professor at the University of Western Australia in 2011. In 2015 he returned to Switzerland as co-chief physician at the Baselland Cantonal Hospital. Since January 1, 2020 he has been Medical Director of Orthopedics at Bethesda Hospital, which is run by the University Hospital. He heads hip and pelvic surgery at both hospitals.
Academically, he completed his second degree in biomechanics at the University of Western Australia in 2007 with a PhD. In 2009 he was awarded the Venia Docendi (teaching assignment, habilitation, private lecturer) at the University of Basel and since 2015 he has been an adjunct professor with a corresponding teaching assignment.
Prof. Karl Stoffel is a specialist in the entire spectrum of modern conservative therapy as well as joint-preserving hip and pelvic surgery. His main areas of focus as a hip specialist in the field of surgical work are hip joint arthroscopy (hip endoscopy), corrective osteotomies of the pelvis and thigh in cases of dysplasia and misalignment, as well as minimally invasive and muscle-sparing hip endoprosthetics. Thanks to his many years of work at various university hospitals in Germany and abroad, he has extensive experience in the complex treatment of loosening and infections of artificial hip joints. As a proven specialist in trauma surgery of the musculoskeletal system, he also deals with non-healing or malhealed bone fractures of the upper and lower extremities.
With over 50 publications and over 150 lectures, Prof. Karl Stoffel is recognized nationally and internationally as an excellent hip specialist, traumatologist and scientist.
