A. Profile

Pedro Miguel Sousa Varanda (Porto, 1976) graduated from Porto University Medical School in 1999 and then
completed the two-year general residency in Hospital São João, Porto. He obtained his board certification for
orthopedic surgery in 2008 after completing the six years orthopedics residency program. He underwent a
fellowship in spine surgery at the Twin Cities Spine Center, Minneapolis in 2008. He is currently the
Coordinator of the Orthopedic Department of the CUF Porto Institute and Director of the Department of
Orthopedics in the Braga University Hospital in Braga where he is also the head of the spine unit. As a spine
surgeon, he has great interest in degenerative, oncological and spine trauma pathology. Dr. Varanda teaches
orthopedics and is a clinical investigator at Minho University School of Health Sciences and at the ICVS/3B´s
PT Government Associate Laboratory. His research interests are focused on disc regeneration and development
of new approaches to the spine and he is currently a Ph.D. student at the same institution. He is also a board
member of the Portuguese Orthopedic and Traumatology Society, board member of the Portuguese Spine
Society, Coordinator of the Spine Section of the Portuguese Orthopedic and Traumatology Society and directs
the annual international course ‘Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery’ at the Minho University.
