Professor Michael H.J. Verhofstad (1968) is an orthopedic trauma surgeon. After his general surgical training and a fellowship program in trauma and orthopedic trauma in Utrecht, he worked .as a consultant for 10 years in a large non-academic trauma center. Since 2013 he is a professor in trauma surgery and directs the Department for General and Orthopaedic Trauma of the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the largest level 1 Trauma Center in the Netherlands.
His current clinical and research activities mainly concern acute injuries and posttraumatic healing disorders of the extremities, pelvis, and trunk. Prof. Verhofstad has a special interest in the management of (complex) fractures, fracture-related infections, osseointegrated prostheses, organization of trauma care and injury classification. He is a dedicated teacher to students, residents, and colleagues. Besides these activities, he holds some board positions in national and international healthcare-related organizations.
